Diversity & Education:
Setting the Tone, Keeping Momentum, Reaching Out

Students in this section tackle one of the most-discussed issues in higher education: how do you foster a diverse, inclusive environment in large, public universities? Further, without disrespecting students' backgrounds or experiences, how do higher education institutions create graduates who value and seek out diversity in their own lives?

Student Projects and Overviews

Mentoring Course
Ian Lund and Zac Head (Spring 2013) turn to peer mentoring, designing a course where upperclassmen help guide underclassmen through successful college careers that include an appreciation for diversity.
Orientation Sessions
Brianne Buck (Spring 2013), as well as the group of Ryan Pence, Erin Fisher, and Sonny Dill (Spring 2013) see the answer in orientation sessions, talking to students from their first moment on campus about the value of diversity.
Outside Campus
Four student projects stressed the important of looking outside the structure of school for these important lessons:
Rachel Puckett  (Spring 2013) assessed the impact of community-embedded service learning; Corrin Klang (Spring 2013) designed a nonviolence after school curriculum for at-risk youth; Lindsey Belyew, Chris Smith & Ted Cohen (Spring 2013) addressed campus safety issues; and Melody Hoffman, Allie Walsh and Paige Washburn (Spring 2013) explored how their COM degrees can help build effective friendships, reduce bullying, and foster strong mother-daughter relationships.
